Back in the old days, when theaters still made money showing movies that weren’t part of a “movie universe,” December was the best time of year to be a movie junkie. That’s when, in the final weeks of the year, the studios would release all of their most lavishly produced star vehicles, hoping they’d be fresh in voters’ minds come awards season. And even if franchise movies and the shift to home viewing have basically killed off the concept of blockbuster movies for adults, Netflix’s December slate is still keeping the spirit alive with a trio of new movies from lauded creators. .

The first is Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro’s exciting project, a new stop-motion animated adaptation of the classic novel. pinocchio which appears, from the trailer, to be a more expansive and emotionally harrowing version of the all too familiar story. The character designs are uniquely flashy and a bit creepy, as you’d expect from the director of The Pan’s Labyrinthand the early hum is is good enough to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

And last but not least is Crystal Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the second in Rian Johnson’s planned series of mystery stories featuring Daniel Craig’s trailblazing detective Benoit Blanc. The follow-up to the hugely entertaining and surprisingly successful first entry ($312 million, unheard of these days for a movie without a bang) features even more big-name stars than the first, if that’s even possible: Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Katheryn Hahn, and Kate Hudson among them, and a gorgeous Greek backdrop for another tale of murderous hijinks. Let’s see if Netflix has is worth $450 million.

And while you’re enjoying sexy adult fare, your kids can be traumatized by Charles Dickens’ version 300.
