Cuoco and Galecki’s characters, Penny and Leonard, kiss for the first time in episode 6 of the show’s first season. It was also the first time the actors kissed.

“Every scene until we actually got together in real life, it was obvious there was always something there. There was chemistry and we were in love with each other. That was the whole first season until we really got together for real,” Cuoco. she remembers her, admitting that she was “very nervous” when they kissed for the Halloween episode.

“I mean, I was kissing him as Penny before we dated, and it’s weird when you’re in love with someone and you’re kissing them as an actor,” he explains. While it took months for the two to kiss off-camera, it soon became clear, even to Galecki, that they had a connection.

While filming the episode “The Nerdvana Annihilation” later in season 1, Cuoco and Galecki had to film a dream sequence in which Leonard saves Penny in the elevator shaft.

“It was not a pleasant experience for me,” says Cuoco.

“We had to be in each other’s arms, and for a long time, because what we were doing was a stunt,” Galecki recalls. “That was definitely one of the times I think-“

“I think we fell in love a little bit in the elevator shaft,” Cuoco chimes in.

“We felt something, yes. I think it was a big turning point [in our relationship]. At that point, both she and I knew that she felt something mutual, and that it was going to be more of a distraction from work trying to keep ignoring him than acknowledging and surrendering to him,” confirms Galecki.

Cuoco eventually split from her boyfriend, and hours after they broke up, she joined Galecki and the rest of the cast on a trip to Montecito, California. They all had separate cabins, but the actress tried to get Galecki into hers by calling and asking him to come kill a bug.

“Now, to this day, I don’t know if this story is nonsense or not, and if she was hitting on me because she had just broken up with her boyfriend, but I didn’t go to her cabin,” Galecki. declares.

“There was definitely a bug in my room and I was flirting with it! So both things were true! I was like, Ooh, this might be a good way to get him there.! But that didn’t work,” laughs Cuoco. “I couldn’t believe he turned me down. I still think he turned me down because he knew what he was doing. I used the mistake as an excuse, and he still hasn’t come.”

Galecki ended up making the first move not long after that trip when he invited Cuoco to meet him for a glass of wine.

“We started making out in the bar area, and then we’d make out in the parking lot. Johnny can get really crazy and want to hide, while I’m the complete opposite. I would have told everyone the next day at the table.” She would have announced it and said: We are together! But he was like, ‘We can’t tell anyone!’ So we kept it a secret,” recalls Cuoco. “And don’t forget that it was different then. Social networks were not what they are now, so it was easier to keep them hidden. You didn’t know as much about people as you do now. It’s a different world.”

The actors told the cast and crew eventually and no one was that surprised. Galecki and Cuoco’s relationship was serious — “Kaley and I considered getting married,” she says at one point — but her need for privacy ultimately contributed to the couple’s breakup.

“We’re from very different worlds, but we also seem to merge into each other’s worlds in a certain way. It was a lot of fun teaching us different things, but then when I came to want different things, that made things more complicated,” explains Galecki. .

“I think one of the things that created a chasm between us was my strict privacy policies, and Kaley being very, very open about her life. I felt very uncomfortable speaking publicly about it, and I think that hurt Kaley’s feelings a little bit. Kaley”. little, and I can understand that,” he continues. “It certainly wasn’t because I was ashamed of her or our relationship, but I wanted to protect the audience’s acceptance of Penny and Leonard, and not be distracted by the tabloids.”

Galecki continues, “I’m private in general, but it made me particularly uneasy because we were working together, and the show was snowballing at the time in terms of viewership. And at a certain point I felt like we were living this lie because we were going to award shows and functions and pretend that we are not a couple, when in fact we were a very loving couple.

While Galecki says they “had very different interests in what I think we wanted out of our life experience,” that didn’t stop them from becoming close friends after the split.

“I love the friends we are. I think I could value my relationship with her more than any relationship before or since,” he shares.

Cuoco didn’t seem to question his take on the breakup, but added more context.

“Johnny and I also ran out of things to talk about, because we were at work all day, and then we’d go back to one of our places together and say, ‘How was your day? Simon was fun today, right? And we laughed because we had no mystery,” he recalls.

“But we were together for a long time. We really adored each other and we were lucky because while our breakup was going on, there was no foul play, there was nothing wrong with our relationship…it just ended,” Cuoco continues. . “Yeah, there was some pain there for a while, but it didn’t take us that long to get back to who we were before we dated and were friends. He was front row at both of my weddings, and we’ve been very supportive ever since. we adore.”

Galecki still keeps his private life a secret. the actor separated from model Alaina Meyer in 2020. They share a son. As for Cuoco, she is leaving Ozarks actor Tom Pelphrey. They walked the red carpet together at the 2022 Emmy Awards, so it sounds like they’re not at odds about being open about their relationship.
