The 59-year-old director recently helmed the two-hour, 39-minute film, but a longer version also exists.

He said: ‘I mean, I have a four hour version, actually. I make. But you have to lower it to 2 hours 30’.

Luhrmann would have liked to have included more about Elvis’ romance with his first girlfriend, Dixie, as well as his relationship with his band in the film.

The film chronicles Elvis’ childhood and rise to stardom, as well as his relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks).

Luhrmann added to RadioTimes.com: ‘I would have liked to lean more into some of the other things, there’s a lot more. I mean, there are a lot of things that I filmed like the relationship with the band, I had to cut [that] down – and it is very interesting how Colonel [Tom Parker] gets rid of them.

‘The relationship with his first girlfriend, Dixie, you know. And then about how…once he’s caught in a trap, and he’s bewildered and doesn’t understand…someone who has a hole in his heart like Elvis constantly searching and searching for love and finding it on stage but nowhere else place. .’

Butler recently admitted that he felt an “immense amount of fear” playing Elvis.

He said: ‘I felt a great responsibility to Elvis, his family, all the people around the world who love him so much.

“So it was an incredible amount of pressure, and with that comes an immense amount of fear. I began to feel this energetic exchange.

“So I allowed my imagination to really accept that this is Special 68, that I’m doing this for this audience right now.” My career is at stake.

‘I looked in the mirror: I’m dressed in leather, covered in sweat. And I had this moment where all of a sudden I was like, “Okay, I can do this.”
