‘My parents took my sister and me in 1952 in a small mobile home, towed by a truck, from Montana to Alaska. While we were there for almost two years, an old lady gave my mother a sourdough starter,” she said.

His mother baked with him throughout his childhood and his sister kept him going for years, inspiring Duffy to bake with him as well.

Early in their relationship, he made sourdough pancakes for Purl, 67, who he said tasted ‘extraordinary’, and the idea of ​​starting a business using the starter came up.

“Now I didn’t think I was ever going to start a business, but Linda is Linda and she took it and ran with it instantly,” Duffy said. “We have been dehydrating the original sourdough starter. So it is absolutely pure from the moment my mother received it.

“I think it’s just an interesting commentary on society and times when certain things can remain unchanged and viable,” Duffy said of the family heirloom.

Purl explained that baking is a way for them to connect with family and friends, describing the benefits of literally breaking bread together and why they hope to inspire customers to join similar family traditions.

‘There’s a chance for really good things to happen and for real communication to happen. It starts with the tiny yeast spore, but it can expand into an experience on many levels,” he added.
