Best-selling books in Canada for the week ending August 17, 2022 | Books and Authors

It may be August, but it’s Bad Mother’s Day on this week’s best-seller list.

“I’m Glad My Mom Died,” the darkly funny memoir from former child actress Jennette McCurdy, debuts at No. 1 on the original nonfiction chart. McCurdy found fame on the Nickelodeon series “iCarly” and its spinoff “Sam & Cat,” thanks to an onstage mother who subjected her to starvation diets, endless makeovers and general dysfunctional misbehavior.

And in #6, “There Are Much Worse Moms Than You,” a reassuring look at maternal parenting in the animal kingdom. (Example: Giraffe mothers kick their newborns until they walk; koala mothers feed their young their own poop; and hamster mothers have been known to eat their young. It is written by TV comedy writer Glenn Boozan and illustrated by Priscilla Witte.

Another interesting tidbit: Richard Wagamese, the Ojibwe writer who died in 2017, continues to appear on best-seller lists: his 2012 novel, “Indian Horse,” returned to No. 8 on the Canadian fiction list, and his book of 2016 Ojibwe meditations, “Embers,” is ranked fifth on the Canadian non-fiction list.
